Jesus has confirmed the Holiness of marriage in the Bible’s new testament “Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What, therefore, God hath joined together, let not man put apart” (Matt. 19:5).
God himself confirms the Holiness of marriage, it should be treated with respect, this is why marriage is sacred, it is an important relationship between man and woman and their Lord. Before marriage used to be sincere and poor, divorce was never an option to olden people, they help each other while looking for guidance from their Lord, however, nowadays marriage can you still call it sacred? Many couples are just after fame, all they care about is the public opinion about their marriage, when you check many social media, couples are looking for a perfect partner without caring about the religious aspect of the marriage.
They only care about getting comments and showing the world how beautiful their relationship is. Sadly, they forget about God, they forget they need God’s blessing to have a successful marital life, and that is why the divorce rate is increasing every day. Whenever you didn’t involve God in your affairs, your things might be less blessed.
Nowadays, everything is about money, once people have enough money in their account, they take marriage for fun, marry whenever they want, and divorce when they get tired. What is the main purpose of marriage?
The main purpose of marriage as stated in the Bible “And He answered and said, “Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh? So they are no longer two, but one flesh.
What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.” (Matthew 19:4-6 NASB.) Maybe you are single, wondering what is the purpose of marriage, is all the hard work and headache you go through to get a healthy marriage worth it? Or are you married wondering whether it is worth it to fight for your marriage or not? Either way, below are some biblical perspectives that will answer all your questions.
Who originated the marriage institution?
God originated the marriage institution so marriage is more than the piece of paper that legally binds you to your spouse. “The Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. The man said, “This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman because she was taken out of Man.” (Genesis 2:22-24 NASB) God created the first man and woman and united them, they became flesh although sin came and tore them apart later.
To point creation at him
Marriage is a strategic piece of creation designated to point people at him. He created men and women to crave that relationship as a way of pointing us back to Him. “Wives, be subject to your husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He being the Savior of the body.
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.” (Ephesians 5:22-33 NASB)
Sexual intimacy
Another purpose of marriage is to solve desire urges instead of fornicating. God created everybody naked and unashamed with a desire for sexual intimacy. “Let your fountain be blessed, And rejoice in the wife of your youth. As a loving hind and a graceful doe, Let her breasts satisfy you at all times; Be exhilarated always with her love.” (Proverbs 5:18-19 NASB) God designated sexual intimacy for pleasure and to reproduce. “Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge.” (Hebrews 13:4 NASB)
